📖 About Devprayag

  • Alaknanda meets Bhagirathi at 471m elevation to form the Ganga river
  • Raghunath Temple sits directly above the confluence on a narrow stone ridge
  • Rishikesh lies 70 km south with regular bus connections taking 2.5 hours
  • Single main road with limited shops and ATMs - carry cash from Rishikesh

Two rivers collide at Devprayag - the Alaknanda flowing from Badrinath and the Bhagirathi from Gaumukh - and from that point, the river officially becomes the Ganga. The confluence sits in a steep valley at 471m, with the Raghunath Temple perched on a rocky outcrop directly above where the waters meet. You will see the colour difference clearly - the Alaknanda runs milky-grey with glacial silt while the Bhagirathi flows cleaner and greener. Rishikesh sits 70 km downstream, Srinagar (Garhwal) 35 km upstream towards Badrinath.

The Raghunath Temple dates back several centuries and houses an ancient idol of Lord Rama, drawing pilgrims year-round especially during Makar Sankranti in mid-January. Stone steps descend from the temple to the confluence ghats where priests perform daily Ganga aarti at sunrise and sunset. The town itself clings to the hillside with narrow lanes, a small market area, and a few dharamshalas. During the Char Dham yatra season from May to October, the highway (NH58) passing through Devprayag sees heavy traffic heading to Badrinath and Kedarnath.

Devprayag suits pilgrims, photographers interested in river confluences, and travellers breaking the long drive to Badrinath. The town has just two or three small ATMs that often run dry during peak season, and mobile connectivity drops to 2G or vanishes completely in the valley. Bring sufficient cash from Rishikesh or Srinagar.

🎯 Things to Do in Devprayag

1
Visit Raghunath Temple Complex

The temple stands on a sharp ridge directly above where Alaknanda and Bhagirathi converge, reached by 150 stone steps from the main road. Open sunrise to sunset with no entry fee, though donations are customary. During Char Dham season (May-October), expect crowds and limited space for photography at the viewpoint.

2
Watch Rivers Meet Below

Stone ghats at the confluence let you walk down to water level where the two rivers flow side by side before merging - Alaknanda grey, Bhagirathi greenish. Early morning (6am-8am) and late afternoon (5pm-7pm) see the best light for photography. The current runs strong, so swimming is prohibited and the fine for entering the water is Rs 500.

3
Attend Ganga Aarti Ceremony

Priests perform aarti at the confluence ghats twice daily - sunrise around 6am and sunset around 6:30pm depending on season. The evening ceremony lasts 20 minutes with oil lamps, bells, and chanting. Space at the ghat is limited to about 50 people, so arrive 15 minutes early during peak months.

4
Drive to Chandrabadni Temple

Chandrabadni sits at 2,050m elevation, 40 km from Devprayag with a 2 hour drive via Chamiyala village. The last 3 km is a motorable dirt track ending at a small parking area, then 500 metres on foot to the temple. Views span the Garhwal valleys and on clear days you can spot Bandarpunch and Chaukhamba peaks.

5
Explore Kyunkaleshwar Mahadev Temple

This cave temple dedicated to Shiva sits 2 km upstream from Devprayag along the Alaknanda bank, reachable by a footpath from the main road. The cave entrance is low - you will need to duck - and the inside holds a natural Shiva lingam. Open all day with no fee, but the path gets slippery during and after monsoon.

💡 Visitor Tips

1

Temperatures range from 2.5°C (36.5°F) in January mornings to 36.8°C (98.2°F) in May afternoons. Carry layers from October to March - mornings need a fleece, afternoons just a t-shirt.

2

No permits or advance bookings are required for Devprayag itself. Dharamshalas near Raghunath Temple operate first-come-first-served and fill up during major festivals, especially Makar Sankranti in mid-January.

3

NH58 from Rishikesh is paved but narrow with hairpin bends between Shivpuri and Devprayag. Landslides during July-August monsoon (369mm in July alone) can block the road for hours - check road status before leaving Rishikesh.

4

Two small ATMs exist near the main market but often run empty during Char Dham season. UPI works intermittently - network drops to 2G in the valley. The nearest reliable ATMs are in Srinagar 35 km north or Rishikesh 70 km south. Carry cash for meals and donations.

5

Most dharamshalas and small hotels cluster around the bus stand and temple approach road, with basic rooms from Rs 400-800 per night (confirm locally — rates vary by season). For more comfort, stay in Rishikesh or Srinagar and visit Devprayag as a day trip.
