Dugadda

The sanctuary entrance lies 12 km east of Dugadda checkpoint where forest guards verify permits before allowing vehicles into core zones. Entry costs Rs 500 per vehicle plus Rs 150 per person for Indian nationals, with permits issued only until 3:00 PM at the range office (confirm locally — rates vary by season). October to March brings higher elephant sighting chances along the Sonanadi River corridor compared to summer months when animals move deeper.

The trailhead starts 8 km west of town near Dhara village, following a 6 km forest path that climbs 300 metres through sal and oak groves. Guides from the forest office charge around Rs 800 for half-day treks and can identify bird species like kalij pheasants and brown-fronted woodpeckers (confirm locally — rates vary by season). Leeches become aggressive during July to September, making the trail unpleasant despite the greenery.

The Kyari Chaur grassland sits 15 km northeast via a forest road that requires a high-clearance vehicle during monsoons. Gujjar herders bring buffalo herds here between April and October, and the meadow offers views of the Corbett landscape spreading south toward Ramnagar. No entry fee applies but carrying water and snacks matters since no stalls operate here.

Three small temples - Hanuman Mandir, Durga Temple, and Shiv Mandir - stand along the 2 km main road through Dugadda town center. The Durga Temple, 200 metres from the checkpoint, sees most activity during Navratri when locals gather for evening aartis at 7:00 PM. This works as a morning walk if you stay overnight but does not justify a dedicated visit.

The forested slope behind the range office hosts resident species including gray-headed canary flycatcher, white-throated laughingthrush, and chestnut-bellied nuthatch year-round. Early mornings between 6:00 AM and 8:00 AM offer the best activity before vehicle traffic picks up on the main road. Bring binoculars because the canopy sits 15-20 metres high and spotting small birds without magnification proves difficult.
