📖 About Bageshwar Town

  • Sangam of Saryu and Gomti rivers at Bagnath temple draws pilgrims year-round
  • Uttarayani fair in January attracts over 100,000 traders and devotees annually
  • Base for Pindari Glacier (90 km) and Kausani (38 km) treks in Kumaon
  • Limited ATMs and spotty mobile connectivity - carry cash from Haldwani or Kathgodam

The Saryu and Gomti rivers meet at Bagnath temple in the heart of Bageshwar, making this a key pilgrimage stop in Kumaon for over 1,500 years. At 920 metres (3,018 feet), the town stays warmer than nearby hill stations - April sees highs of 24.9°C (76.8°F) while December mornings drop to -4.1°C (24.6°F). Most visitors come for the Uttarayani fair in mid-January, but the town also serves trekkers heading to Pindari Glacier, 90 km northeast, and Sunderdhunga Valley, 85 km away.

Bagnath temple, rebuilt in 1450 by Kumaon king Laxmi Chand, sits where the sage Markandeya is said to have meditated. The temple complex includes shrines to Shankar, Parvati, Ganesh, and Surya, with stone carvings dating back six centuries. During Uttarayani, the maidan near the confluence becomes a massive trading ground for Kumaoni traders selling woollens, local grains, handicrafts, and temple offerings. The fair coincides with Makar Sankranti and runs for five days, pulling traders from across Pithoragarh, Almora, and Chamoli districts.

Bageshwar suits pilgrims, cultural travellers, and trekkers using it as a staging town for high-altitude routes. The town has basic guesthouses, limited dining beyond simple dhabas, and only two ATMs - both often run out during Uttarayani. Mobile signals drop frequently inside the narrow valley.

🎯 Things to Do in Bageshwar Town

1
Visit Bagnath Temple Complex

The temple stands right at the river confluence where stone steps lead down to the sangam for ritual bathing. Morning aarti starts at 6 AM and evening prayers at 7 PM with no entry fee. During Uttarayani in January, the complex and surrounding streets become impassable due to fair crowds exceeding one lakh people.

2
Attend Uttarayani Mela January

The five-day fair begins on Makar Sankranti (mid-January) with traders setting up over 500 stalls on the maidan near the bus stand. Local Kumaoni woollens, copper vessels, agricultural tools, and temple bells dominate the market. Accommodation fills up weeks ahead and hotel rates triple - book before December or stay in Garur 20 km away (confirm locally — rates vary by season).

3
Trek to Baijnath Temple

The 12th-century Shiva temple sits 19 km north in Baijnath village, reachable by local bus in 45 minutes or a two-hour uphill walk from town. The temple complex has intricate stone carvings and a large courtyard with mountain views. Shared taxis charge Rs 50-80 per person one way but run only until 5 PM (confirm locally — rates vary by season).

4
Explore Chandika Temple Hilltop

Chandika Devi temple sits 7 km east on a forested hill 1,200 metres high with views over the valley and Nanda Devi range on clear days. A steep footpath from the bus stand takes 2.5 hours uphill or you can drive to the base and walk 20 minutes. The temple attracts fewer crowds than Bagnath and stays open sunrise to sunset with no entry fee.

5
Base for Pindari Trek

Bageshwar serves as the road-end staging point for the 90 km drive to Khati village, where the Pindari Glacier trek begins. Most trekkers overnight here to stock supplies, register with the forest department on Mall Road, and arrange porters or guides. The town has basic trekking gear shops but limited selection - serious trekkers should bring equipment from Delhi or Kathgodam.

💡 Visitor Tips

1

Winter nights from December to February drop to -5.6°C (21.9°F) to -4.1°C (24.6°F), so pack woollens, a heavy jacket, and thermals. Summer days in May reach 27.4°C (81.3°F) - light cottons and a sun hat work fine then.

2

Book accommodation at least three weeks ahead for Uttarayani fair (mid-January) as the town's 15-odd hotels fill completely. Temple visits and regular treks need no advance permits, but Pindari Glacier requires forest department registration at the range office on Mall Road.

3

The NH109 from Haldwani narrows considerably after Garur with single-lane sections and monsoon landslide risk from July to September. Small cars handle the route better than large SUVs in the tight turns near Kapkot.

4

Only two ATMs operate in Bageshwar - State Bank on Mall Road and one near the bus stand - and both run dry during Uttarayani. UPI works intermittently due to poor network inside the valley. Carry enough cash from Haldwani or Kathgodam as card machines are rare.

5

Most guesthouses and dharamshalas cluster near the bus stand and along Mall Road with budget rooms from Rs 400-800 and mid-range hotels from Rs 1,200-2,000 per night (confirm locally — rates vary by season).
